چکیده

When focusing ultrasound through strongly aberrating layers such as bones, adaptive focusing techniques need to be used. They aim at recovering the delays to be applied to each emission channel of the ultrasonic (US) therapeutic array in order to compensate the phase shifts induced by the aberrator. We recently proposed a new energy-based technique requiring the sole knowledge of the acoustic intensity at the desired focus (1). MR-Acoustic Radiation Force Imaging (MR-ARFI) was first proposed in 1998 to map the displacement induced by the radiation force of a focused ultrasound beam (2). When properly acquired, the MR phase signal can be shown to be directly linked to the local acoustic intensity. The use of MR-ARFI for the proposed adaptive focusing technique is demonstrated experimentally in the present work.

MR-guided adaptive focusing of therapeutic ultrasound beams in the human head.

PURPOSE This study aims to demonstrate, using human cadavers the feasibility of energy-based adaptive focusing of ultrasonic waves using magnetic resonance acoustic radiation force imaging (MR-ARFI) in the framework of non-invasive transcranial high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. METHODS Energy-based adaptive focusing techniques were recently proposed in order to achieve aberrat...

Rapid MR-ARFI method for focal spot localization during focused ultrasound therapy.

MR-guided focused ultrasound (FUS) is a noninvasive therapy for treating various pathologies. MR-based acoustic radiation force imaging (MR-ARFI) measures tissue displacement in the focal spot due to acoustic radiation force. MR-ARFI also provides feedback for adaptive focusing algorithms that could correct for phase aberrations caused by the skull during brain treatments. This work developed a...

Progress in Development of HIFU CMUTs for use under MR-guidance

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive treatment that potentially reduces patient morbidity, lowers costs, and increases treatment accessibility. Traditionally, piezoelectric transducers are used for HIFU, but capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) have many advantages, including fabrication flexibility, low loss, an...

Shear wave elasticity imaging: a new ultrasonic technology of medical diagnostics.

Shear wave elasticity imaging (SWEI) is a new approach to imaging and characterizing tissue structures based on the use of shear acoustic waves remotely induced by the radiation force of a focused ultrasonic beam. SWEI provides the physician with a virtual "finger" to probe the elasticity of the internal regions of the body. In SWEI, compared to other approaches in elasticity imaging, the induc...

Iron-gold (Fe2O3@Au) core-shell nano-theranostic for magnetically targeted photothermal therapy under magnetic resonance imaging guidance

Introduction: Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a nanotechnology-assisted cancer hyperthermia approach in which the interaction between laser light and plasmonic nanoparticles generates a localized heating for thermoablation of the tumor. Recent efforts in the area of PTT follow two important aims: (i) exploitation of targeting strategies for preferential accumulation of plasmonic ...
